74th annual One World Day Parade

Vejigantes
This was the first time the Puertorriqueños were in this parade, and they brought Vejigantes. They were a first for me. Puerto Rico has streams of culture from Spain, Africa, and American Indians (Taíno). Vejigantes came from celebrating Fiesta de Santiago Apostól (July 25). He was called the Moorslayer. People dressed as demons to represent the Moors, who were finally defeated in Spain in 1492.

Vejiga is a cow bladder, and gigante is a giant. The costume has a mask (careta), a large cape. In Puerto Rico, especially in Ponce, they come in carnival season. They show up for other celebrations. I read, the mask has an Indian format, and the Africa component is the drumming accompaniment, and dance.
They looked like a happy troupe.
One can only get a good view from higher ground. Some people do not realise that Puerto Rico has been a US territory for well over a century. One of the some is, of course, the idiot racist who is occupying the presidency. Such a person does not understand America comes together. "America First" is to foment division.
The main celebration was the 30 year anniversary of people in the Baltic States holding hands across the countries, in the last year of the Soviet state (23 August 1989). Some two million people over 400 miles made a human chain.
Most of the units have a garden in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. Brasil does not. Someone is holding a sign referring to the catastrophe across Amazonia's rain forest (and the insane current government).
The French also do not have a garden. They are listed to have one. Cultural Gardens without the French...tsk, tsk, tsk. They were waiting for a few more people to come. We need Marianne. They did not have Lady Liberty with them...sacre bleu.
But someone else did. Vive la liberté!
This is Cleveland, but from Pittsburgh a contingent joined the Chinese.
People watched from the sidewalks and grass.
Growing up in Cold War America, one would not expect people in Russian military uniforms marching on Liberty Boulevard. To-day, a bust of Cosmonaut Jurij Gagarin was scheduled to be dedicated.
Serbs in folk costume. Sheepskin in summer, can not be too comfortable.

Ukrainians in Parma

Parade begins on State Road, travelling north.
To-day, in Parma, the Ukrainians had a parade. Many people have come to America, in part, to freely practice their religion and customs. The Ukrainians have several churches of the Eastern rites, most Orthodox. Parma has several parishes.
The truck that pulled the float in the previous foto, also was carrying this. Sunflowers are beautiful crop that grow in Ukraine.

It looks like Normandy High School's cheerleaders are now the Dazzlers.
 Someone made a call.

 This is a family event.

The first to see the world, want the world to continue

Jurij Aleksejevič Gagarin is in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.
Growing up during the space race and the cold war, who would have thought there would be memorials to Russians in America. On top of the helmet are the Cyrillic letters for SSSR, which translates into English as USSR.
Gagarin was the first man in space, and he saw the beauty of this world, and the necessity to keep it so.
There are quite a few of this particular bust around the world, including Colorado Springs, Washington DC, Long Island, Antarctica, Bethlehem [supra]...  Ruslan Fatalievich Bayramov has given these busts by the sculptor Aleksej Leonov [coincidentally, another Aleksej Leonov was the first man to walk in space]. Bayramov created Dialogue of Cultures to advance knowledge in Russia and the world. He has created an ethnographic tourist park and museum in Kaluga Russia. Trying to research his history, could not find the source of his wealth. His parents were philologists in Baku, his mother Russian, and his father Azeri Turk.

And the Ethiopians see the beauty of the world, the danger it currently is in, and the necessity to preserve the world and its wonders. They note 'Lucy' [upper left panel] was the oldest human ancestor, she lived in what is now Ethiopia, and was found by Cleveland scientists. Saturday will be the formal unveiling of  the mosaics in the Ethiopian Garden. Zerihun Yetmgeta created the original art, and Ernesto Spinelli was the mosaic artist who made it into mosaics in Cleveland. They and the Ethiopian ambassador will be at the ceremony.

There are several plaques on both sides explaining the images.

Akron Black Stockings

The Cleveland Blues played the Akron Black Stockings in Middleburg Heights. Yes, that was the complete address we got. We tried to find the field, the first two guesses were wrong. A phone search lead us to the library, and behind it the game was to begin when we pulled in.

This dog, Loki, is a grade A mascot. He is still missing his brother, Thor.
The game was played so as Abraham Lincoln and the Yankees would find it current. The field is all grass, and home is a round plate. This is how the game looked before the introduction of gloves, and other items.
 see earlier post: [click]

Only swing and miss strikes are called.
Runners can be tagged out if they over run first, second, or third.

 Out at home.

Playing bare handed, it is advisable to use both hands together. After eight innings, it was Cleveland 22, Akron 17; and i think that was the final score.
After the game, players doff their caps, cheer, and then shake hands with the other team.

2019 Miscellany #8

from Prospect, transformers and a view of Conversion of St. Paul
dancing to polka music at St. Casimir's

 Chinese Cultural Garden at night
The Temple in University Circle is still used for High Holy Days, but the public has more access to it when Case Western Reserve University opens it for performances. The United States Coast Guard played Tuesday night. The encore was Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. which everyone loves. I heard someone singing, "Be kind to your web-footed friends, For a duck may be somebody's mother, Be kind to your friends in the swamp".
