Some Summit County Beauty

Akron Mon Community Temple's pagoda (dhatu cetiya) completed in 2018.

The Mon people practice the oldest existing form of Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism. Most of  Akron Mon came from Myanmar (Burma), and some from Thailand.

2025 Miscellany #20

 

New mural in Ohio City replaces Bernie getting arrested.  Shadows obscure, here is a portion of ancient Greece with a modern addition. Greek coffee is like Turkish coffee, American coffee is different:  it is put in a throwaway container, and is brandished like a torch (either the one with a battery, or real fire).

Well, Parma has replaced the second stolen and vandalised flamingo. A second bunch of probably drunken deplorable yahoos hit this location. Besides being that, these idiots did not have sense to bring a wrench. Using a wrench would have removed the three nuts, instead they snapped the statue off. Well now the flamingos have a bulky gps unit.

There is a graveyard in Cuyahoga Falls that has a large waterfowl pond. There are several farmyard geese, and a pair of  Black Swans that reside there, and sometimes ducky guests. This is the male swan, he is active, and will nip at people.

Three mile water intake crib viewed on a very clear morning from Lakewood; it was  a random shot, i should have taken some care. Pollution used to be so bad, it was seldom seen.

On a Saturday, some of the teachers painted their parking spaces at John Muir Parma.

Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. Plant 1

The building went up in 1910. Some Akronites want to save the clock tower at least. It is not operating now. Akron had, at one time, four major rubber tire makers. Goodyear & Firestone were the largest. Firestone made all the tires for Ford; Harvey and Henry were friends. I do not when the last tire was made in Akron.

One time a lighted Firestone sign was on the framework. December 2020, it was removed.

Akron has given a date of 21 November for the property to find a developer. Fence posts are up, and rolls of fencing lay in the drive. The City of Akron has owned the property for ten years, and they are keen to demolish.

Once the grounds were kept up in landscaping.

Now some of the windows have been busted out.

Some vandalism has had objects scattered.

Cuyahoga Falls Gorge Dam still flowing. Preparations are current to remove the dam. The trail with descending wooden steps is closed, and the final portion of the steps to reach the viewing platform have been removed. The best view is now  reached by a rough rocky path.

Barberton Mum Fest's theme this year was bees.

The mechanism to make this a floral clock is not there again but the display is good.

St. Thomas Hospital (Akron) operated from 1928 to 2023, was demolished in 2024.  Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine founded the hospital. In 1935, it was the first hospital that recognised alcoholism as a medical condition. Three outdoor statues from there are now in front of St. Vincent & Mary High School Akron. They are now so white, that they do not photograph well with my camera; the outline yes, details no.

2025 Miscellany #8 — Parade of the blimps

The last time Democrats had a say in Ohio politics was in 2010, and not much for twenty four years before. Ohio has become a corrupt southern state in those four decades plus. Primary and special elections are held whenever the party so chooses. On occasion, a ballot issue generated by the electorate succeeds, the Repukes often choose to dilute or ignore the new law. Of course, it is a different issue if the party and/or moneyed interests want an issue. So this year the primary was 6 May, and this was posted before entering the polling station. Repuke propaganda has invented the spectre of illegal voting. This year the ballot was very short on voting choices, my ballot was completed by filling in two circles. For that the wily, sneaky, foreign menace would risk punishment by a viciously focused punitive political conviction promoting Republican propaganda. [foto:JZ]

The Cleveland Art Museum has an annual Parade the Circle parade in mid-June. They have set up a workshop tent to work on materials. One is free to observe the working process. This year the theme is the snowy owl. These ballet slippers will decorate dress costumes

On 3 June 1925, to celebrate the centennial of Akron Ohio the Goodyear rubber company had the inaugural flight of their first blimp/airship/dirigible. 3 June [Tuesday] they had three blimps take off from the shore base on Wingfoot Lake. This was open for public viewing from Mogadore State Park at Wingfoot. We got there a little late, as we saw them leaving

After walking our greyhound, and meeting other dogs at the park, we saw them further on the road we had travelled. They made a turn around over us at a donut shop parking lot. A fourth blimp has its home in Germany, and did not cross the ocean.

The blimp stationed here had a jacket similar to the 1925 model. The fotos are a little milky from the Canadian smoke of burning forests of the Canadian west.
