a view from the rubble mound

Nearly a century ago, Cleveland was either the fifth or sixth most populous city in the 48 states. It was an industrial city that attracted residents who laboured in those enterprises. The Works Progress Administration beginning in 1935, put men to work when private industry could not. The WPA built public housing. In 1939-40 the Valley View Estates [projects] were built on a bluff over the Cuyahoga on the old South Side [now called Tremont], with 528 apartments in two storey brick buildings. In 1990, Interstate 490 came through. In 2004, the remaining apartments were demolished. Recently, some of the rubble has been fashioned into mounds by Cleveland Metroparks. Climbing to the top of the tallest mound, a 360° view can be seen of some of the city. It was sunny day, but not quite clear.

Thanks to the Environmental Protection Agency, beginning in 1970, the smokestacks are releasing far less noxious compounds. Now the plumes are mostly steam.

Cassius (L), and Karma (R) came to look at the choo-choos at West 3rd.
Cleveland's Terminal Tower was, for a time, the country's second tallest building.

In the center is the model for Superman's Daily Planet. In the foreground of it is the Indians' ballpark.

Perhaps, the most iconic building in the city, definitely in the neighbourhood is St. Theodosius.  St. Theodosius was partly built with money from Czar Nicholas II. It was a church of the mostly Rusyn immigrants, it had been both Greco-Catholic, and Russian Orthodox.

oops, the sign

There are two houses on Bridge Avenue Cleveland with signs demarcated as the birthplace of John Heisman. [supra] Is the one that had a ceremony yesterday. Further eastward, and on the other side of the street is [infra] the older one [foto 21 December 2010]. To-day, both were there. Local historians had been trying for years to get the correct sign. In 1906 Cleveland renumbered, and renamed its streets. The original sign also had the wrong birth date.
John Heisman's first coaching job was at Oberlin College in 1892, their second season. He was also a player, and that season the team was undefeated with seven wins. They beat [Ohio] State twice, and Michigan once that year. Oberlin would beat State in later years in 40, and 50 point shutouts. In 1921, State lost in their first Rose Bowl appearance:  California Golden Bears 28, Ohio State Buckeyes 0. Later in the year, 8 October, THEE Oberlin Yeomen would defeat State in Columbus 7 to 6. It was the last meeting of the two. Oberlin won ten games, State won thirteen, and three games were tied.
Outside the downtown baseball field, the sign still reads 'Indians'. The American League team has had that name since the 1915 season. It has been rumoured to be changing. They had been Napoleons, and Bluebirds officially before.
Both sides of the sign read this way to-day, with the new message.

Dogwood Winter is over

Dogwood, St. George's Day, Shakespeare Garden.

Two days ago, after the sun came out, Karma inspects a linden.

I remember College Green at Ohio University was full of dogwoods. People talked of when the trees bloomed in North Carolina, and soon thereafter south east Ohio would bloom. There is a farmer term of 'dogwood winter', a cold snap in spring. One should not plant until after 'dogwood winter'. We are a month past the equinox. In the Slavonic lands, Juri Zeleni (Green George) is celebrated as the beginning of green growth of spring.

Valleyview Estates

By St. Theodosius in 1939 Valleyview Estates public housing was built. There was a WPA clay tile mural of the street map with six laboring men (some architects, and an artist, some construction), tools, compass points, a steam shovel demolishing old housing, and the sun by Leroy Flint and Henry Olmer.  The map had barrack style units representing the houses. St. Theodosius is not marked, but the St. Olga Street is. The terra cotta was cleaned by art conservators and re-installed, behind glass, at the successor project Tremont Pointe. It is not easy to see in daylight. These pictures were taken night time.

look, there is much about you in the industrial Middle West

Saint Theodosius viewed from metropark with mounds formed from the rubble of Valley View Estates.
Two of these were at top of the main entrance of John Marshall High Cleveland in 1932 (art deco). A few years ago the old school was demolished, and the new one has the eagles flanking the doors.

Next to the marina by the Lorain Impoundment there is a promenade, on one side of the promenade there is a fence. People have begun placing lovelocks on it, as they do some bridges in Europe.

If the weather is not bad, i think one could go out everyday, and not so very far, and see something to photograph. This is part of a house on East 55th in Newburgh. The house is falling in on itself. A slice in a dome is a spot a telescope peeks out in an observatory.
Jednota building was a house that was expanded with art deco features to serve as a commercial building. Notice the canes in the windows, not too many other windows were made that way. The fence is from the property next door.

virginia bluebells

I read Virginia bluebells like moist soil, and shade, and are alright with rocks, and can be found by flowing water. This year, the spring blooms are early by more than a week.
These photos were taken Wednesday at Hemlock Creek at Bedford Reservation Cleveland  Metroparks. Last year, this was closed to the public because of the early steps to prevent initial spread of the coronavirus. All have not bloomed yet, but it is forming a blue carpet, and that is what i wanted to see. Some of the footpath on the edge has fallen down the wee cliff to the bank.

Some of the even earlier blooms were still there: trout lily (?).

The light color flowers are spring beauties.

Cattle Egret

I have gone birding for birds that have not been there, many times in succession. To-day, i saw a cattle egret associating with Canadian geese at Lorain Impoundment.

This bird has been expanding its territory, after arriving in the New World in 1877.

2021 Miscellany #5

One of the neat things to paint on a schoolyard is a state map of the United States. Would be good introduction for a future weatherman.
One of two owls, seated on books, at Jefferson Park Cleveland. Perhaps they were from an earlier school? John Marshall High?
There are 32 counties in Ireland. Twenty-six are in the Republic of Ireland, and six are part of the British Kingdom. Such an image suggests the Island of Ireland, should be one unit. Another numerical representation is 26 + 6 = 1.

Johnny Cash sang many songs, one was "I've Been Everywhere" in 1996. He sang an American version, the song came from Australia in 1959, and has had many national versions. Here is verse 3 America:
