Thanksgiving time foto safari

Saw this outside the ape and cat house in the Cleveland Zoo. Enjoy the colors of late autumn (November 20th). Anyone confirm Japanese anemone.
Some of the roses of summer have been enduring late autumn, Thanksgiving Thursday by the spigot on St. Casimir's school. It was a cold and sunny day. The next few days are not promising sunny skies. Some days are better for camera use. Photo means light.
Since i was last on the Chinese Cultural Garden platform, they have painted, and patched the railing. In the distance is old Rabbi Silver's temple, now part of Case Western Reserve U.
Well, i find some foto subjects after seeing more active and adventurous photographers show their finds. On the few big holidays we have, there are fewer people around, and foto locations are sometimes easier to snap. Here is my snap of a sign that has reappeared into view on Huron, downtown Cleveland. I am guessing this was painted in the 1950s? Underneath this advert, it seems an earlier is popping out. The rectangles were floors, and supports of a parking garage that was being demolished.

2023 Miscellany #17 — tree lawns and ...

Marlin in Copley Ohio. Passed this on I-77 so many times, so now i went to their parking lot. They do not have marlin on the menu.
Just past peak (18 November) red maples in Euclid Ohio. These are tree lawns, very few locales use this term; but look they are exactly that. In Akron you will hear the term 'devil strip', much more confusing.
In Euclid, on the shore of Lake Erie, someone had fun in decoration.
These two yard and porch decorations i snapped to-day, both in Parma. What season to decorate for? It is rare to see Turkey Day decorations.

Parma High is beginning demolition on campus. Katie had her parking space.
After George Floyd was murdered, nicknames for some schools and teams were reconsidered. Parma had been Redmen for years. There were community meetings on whether to change the name. The decision was to change the name. The school had its last students graduate in June, 235 Redmen.

sidaway bridge

Cleveland has one suspension bridge. It was last used in 1966. After the Hough riots it was vandalised.
It was built over Kingsbury Run, which became notorious with the torso killer in the 1930s. Then the Kinsman side was somewhat Hungarian (Magyar), and the southerly Jackowa side was Polish. By the 1960s, demographic change (euphemism) was in place on the Kinsman side.
The wooden planks have long been gone.
The Kinsman side of the bridge in April 2010. There is some talk now of rehabilitation of the structure, it was a foot bridge. Perhaps part of a bike trail?

Fleetski Street

One end of Fleet Avenue is a bridge over the interstate, and on the bridge the last few years there have been several national flags. To-day, they were all down. They do take a beating from the wind. [click 2013] I do not remember seeing an Ukrainian, Pan-African, or Puerto Rican flag before, those groups were not resident before, a couple of them may not have much or any presence now.
This sign has been refurbished from a different location. It used to read 'Polish Village' and had an illustration of a couple in 19th century dress, and was on East 71st (i think). This area was called Newburgh, in the late 1970s a group began calling it 'Slavic Village',
Karma passed this by.
There were several of these signs on this property.
This sculpture grill is perhaps six years old, it has not weathered well. It is in front of a butcher shop.
Most of the houses on this end of Fleet are gone. This is in front of one that remained.
These two fotos are of a stormwater infiltration basin. They are below street level.

great foto safari saturday morning

Had a two hour window for playing with the camera, this morning. This was almost the last foto of the day. This was on West 54th, near the shoreway. Behind the doe, a new downtown skyscraper is going up.
On the other side of town, we went to see the new statue that was installed yesterday. After a multiple year wait, it finally arrived from Viet Nam. I heard, and read, that this the second statue. The first broke in two. There is a marble mountain there. The garden is not yet complete, i expect some more pieces.
Close up, but she has no face.
The fence outside the Rockefeller Greenhouse was dented by a falling tree. The offending tree has been cut up behind/inside the fence.
Cleveland Aquarium at Gordon Park (east side) was closed in 1985. It is being torn down this week. A rude graffiti is temporarily on view.

when someone prods you

I was reading a chat board on line. The post was: "Evangelical" appears to be a synonym for "hypocrite." I replied, "no shit! i could elaborate on this, but people will be upset...".  Someone replied to me, "Please elaborate".  It took a while to organise some thoughts:

"John Calvin was the virtual founder of America." -- Leopold von Ranke
There are five main doctrines of Calvinism. Three of them (Unconditional Election, Irresistible Grace, Perseverance of the Saints) allow for total depravity (which is the first of the five). The three together say God alone chooses you, and gives you grace which cannot be undone. You are special, and can do anything without consequences. You have absolute license, shame and hypocrisy do not apply, ethics and morality are moot. As applied to the United States this becomes Manifest Destiny, and American exceptionalism. Being Protestants, they base this on 'sola scriptura', it is bible based fully and alone. The big problem with this is selective interpretation. An isolated quote is paired with other isolated quotes, and by illogic of unrelated premises any squirrelly conclusion is made. Someone not in the sect/cult looks at this and is astonished by the nonsense.

Calvinists are not alone in this sort of magical thinking. There is no one Calvinistic church, many of these call themselves 'Reformed', and they are individual by nation. The Scottish Reformed churches are the various Presbyterians, additionally many of the Baptist sects are calvinistic.

Now, the Pentecostal churches, some calling themselves 'Charismatic', are prone to private revelation to create new doctrines. One movement within them is having recent political influence, New Apostolic Reformation. Their beliefs are restorationist, dominionist, and Christofascist. Some of the latter overlaps with Seven Mountains Dominionism, which takes a sentence from Revelation, and another from the Prophets, and creates a political fantasy. Some within the Evangelicals (Baptists), and Pentecostalists follow this. What names are associated with this?, Rafael Cruz, and his son Rafael (Ted) Junior, Lauren Bobert, Paula White (Trump's spiritual advisor [guffaw, cough, guffaw] Paula White, and other wacko Trumpster preachers (including: Lance Wallnau, Julie Green). The new House Speaker [currently Mike Johnson] is rumoured to be in this group. They all talk of prophecy, anointing, and being ordained, and spiritual warfare.

That last paragraph was full of insanity. Restorationists (e.g. Joseph Smith who invented Mormonism and was running for US President, John Nelson Darby who invented 'the Rapture') believe all other churches are false from the beginning, they create their religion and say this was the original religion under Jesus and his first apostles. Dominionists believe their ideology ought to rule the country/world; that is a short hop to Christofascism. Many of these have self proclaimed prophets, and these prophets expect to be obeyed. Trumpsterism, Qanon fantasies, blend or duplicate these inanities and insanities. Of course, some of these are just charlatans, scoundrels, conmen, and grifters.

Logan Elm & mid autumn

The man has a sense of humour.
Going down to the steel mill, Cleveland.
Circleville tower of orange squash 2023, looks the same every year. Well, i have only seen it three times; but the first time was over 30 years ago. I do enjoy the sight.
Tinkers Creek Gorge, Bedford O.

After the Circleville visit, we went a few miles south to Logan Elm State Memorial. Great place to sit and have lunch. Weather was beautiful, the trees were in fall colors. The park is surrounded by farm land.

inside the memorial park

Ohio Historical Marker for Logan, chief of the Mingos who is remembered for a short speech, here in 1774.

I appeal to any white man to say, if ever he entered Logan's cabin hungry, and he gave him not meat; if ever he came cold and naked, and he clothed him not. During the course of the last long and bloody war, Logan remained idle in his cabin, an advocate for peace. Such was my love for the whites, that my countrymen pointed as they passed, and said, Logan is the friend of the white men. I have even thought to live with you but for the injuries of one man. Col. Cresap, the last spring, in cold blood, and unprovoked, murdered all the relations of Logan, not sparing even my women and children. There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature. This has called on me for revenge. I have sought it: I have killed many: I have fully glutted my vengeance. For my country, I rejoice at the beams of peace. But do not harbour a thought that mine is the joy of fear. Logan never felt fear. He will not turn on his heel to save his life. Who is there to mourn for Logan? Not one.
I put a spot of different color in an area i erased some graffiti from the sign. The tree where he spoke lasted until a storm in 1964.
