also on Payne

Marc Brown used to have frequent, interesting commercials run on late, late night teevee.  They were similar in style to the skits that horror movie hosts did. He had a distinctive, low volume, raspy voice. His furniture store is now empty.

In Union There is Strength

This was from 1949 to 1999 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America,  Sidney Hillman Memorial Building. Hillman was the union's leader and died in 1946. The bold script on top, and the concave front of the building is in art deco style. The architect, Milo Holdstein, was a Clevelander. This must have been one of the last buildings in the style, which flourished in the '20s and '30s. As that style waned, so did the union. Locally they never unionised Richman Brothers. The union merged with other garment workers in 1976, and again in 1995. Since 2004, the building has been Norma Herr Women’s Center. Her name is where Hillman's name was. Vertically, from the far left, Amalgamated was spelled out. The previous lettering was in similar font of the motto, "In Union There is Strength".

2021 Miscellany #1

This is repeated across the front of the building at 3740 Carnegie, Cleveland. Cleveland has a few art deco exteriors. There is a wee plaque by the door reading the best small business building 1935-Chamber of Commerce. Would like to know who the original tenant was.
Sarah Benedict House on Prospect has what looks like an altar in the garden.

stuff to see on a February morning, east side Cleveland

There are a pair of cupids in Lake View Cemetery. On occasion they are decorated like stone porch geese are. To-day is St. Valentine, but i think this is winter gear. The other cupid has a black bonnet. This was the lightest foto snapped of them. Snow does not make for many good picture with cheap cameras.
In November early, these papers were posted up and down on Carnegie, and seemingly the next day were removed. This one is one that was missed on 116th. Apropos seeing it after T****'s second acquittal. He is still a criminal, traitor, and loser.
There is some very good brick work on this fire house built in 1898, Station 26, at Kinsman & E. 79th. Horses pulled the fire wagons then. It has been slated to close more than once. The center bump out's three windows have been replaced by bricks, and glass blocks. Wonder whether this was Cleveland's best looking fire house.

Tatra Savings & Loan Co. began in 1909.  1925? a new building was built at Woodhill & Sophia. Mame was changed to State Savings & Loan Co. in 1946 and moved in 1952. Declared insolvent and sold in 1986. Tatra is the English spelling of the mountain range which is the northern border of Slovakia. This had been a Slovak neighbourhood. The American Eagle was often prominent on banking buildings in the 1920s, but this S&L also prominently advertised its savings interest rate (that was a thing in the past).
Sometime later someone started a church, his name is on the sign. This is common in the Black neighbourhoods in Cleveland.

Guilty! whadya gonna do bout it?

Trump will not be convicted. Trump is not on trial. The Republican Party is on trial. Republican senators will not admit themselves, and their party guilty.

Y'no, years ago the Freemasons realised their membership was continuing to shrink. They commissioned a study to see how they could attract new, young members. The conclusion was that younger men were not very interested in the ceremonies, and other things. Freemasons liked the ceremonies, and other stuff. They would not change, and their membership continues to shrink.

Republicans are not going to change their behaviour. They are what they are, and they like it that way. We will see how their membership holds, of  course they survived Hoover and his Depression, Nixon and his criminality, the utter vileness of Gingrich, the incompetency and mendacity of bush jr, and they still celebrate Reagan's attack on reality and the American way.

Republican speak: cancel culture = public censure for mendacity and exhortation to violence

Republicans know they must lie, cheat, and be hypocrites to achieve and maintain power. They are very clever to find useful devious terminology. One egregious example was "death panels" when the Affordable Care Act was discussed, the real death panels are medical insurance companies. They are the gatekeepers for medical care. Another egregious one was the Orwellian term "enhanced interrogation" as an euphemism for torture.

Began hearing this stupid term, "cancel culture", after T**** used it in a campaign foto-op in front of Mt. Rushmore on July 3rd. He said it was part of totalitarianism. First of all, Orange Caligula wants instant revenge on those who disagree with him. He is vindictive and vengeful, he has spoken of his glee for vengeance.

Alexei Anatolievich Navalny during his latest show trial referred to the Russian dictator as Vladimir the Poisoner. Vladimir's protégé is Donald the Destroyer. Donald, by the press, is called a "disruptor". No, Donnie delights in destruction. He enjoys destroying people, and this country. Colin Kaepernick knelt in silence, was attacked by Trump, and black listed from football employment.

On January 6th, his putsch attempt failed. The chief traitors in the Senate: Cruz, Hawley, Johnson were in support of him that day. The Republican propaganda machine, and the guilty Republicans babble and blither about being cancelled. They refuse to be held accountable, and take vociferous umbrage about it. T****'s other congressional toadies have protected him, and attacked those critical. Rand Paul has been defending the trumpster militia by comparing them to the words and actions of black people.

A boycott is simply refusing to do business with someone because of their bad behaviour. Those engaged in that behaviour are upset that they are not supported. Here their fake outrage is made public with a demand to be accepted.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the insurrectionist, and extremist outhouse rat crazy Republican is a very recently seated Congressman. She has recently worn, while speaking on the floor of the House, face coverings with the words: Trump won, free speech, and censured. Trump did not win, and she has not been silenced.

Wednesday, i was riding through Ohio's Knox and Licking Counties. There were many Trump flags. There were also signs, "stop the steal", and one very large one with Biden Benghazi 2012. Republicans are relentless, ruthless, and remorseless.

winter touristing

On this rare sunny day, the crew drove about Licking and Knox counties. Some of the sites were not fully available in the winter snow. We went on the 3rd, since then it has been sunny each day, and cold, very cold. It has barely moved above 20°F. In Newark, the county seat of Licking there is a totem pole carved by an Alaskan. The Amerindians of the coastal northwest have totem poles. The Delaware had been in central Ohio, and "Licking" is an anglicisation for "where the flood waters recede".Here is the funny part: as the foto shows, the pole is to remind people of the flood of January 1959, and somehow prevent another one. The pole has been cared for, and protected..
Mike Major. Johnny Clem. 1999. Newark.
The youngest soldier in American history joined the Union Army as a nine year old. He was born in Newark, and served with the 22nd Michigan. He retired in 1915 as a brigadier general. Johnny started as a drummer boy, had trouble enlisting, and became a major general after retirement. He was twice wounded, and was a prisoner of war. He deserves a statue, but his face looks like a cast of paper mâché.
Gary Lee Price. Mother Teresa, Great Contributors Sculpture. Newark.
Ohio State has a branch campus in Newark. Throughout campus there are benches with historical figures. Traipsing through campus was not a welcome pursuit with gym shoes in the snow. I'll be back. Price has many bronzes, and sells copies. This series is currently at thirteen. Teresa is number eleven. The campus also has other pieces by him.
In Mount Vernon (county seat of Knox County) there is a dog fountain, modelled after one in Toronto, both by Claude Cormier. It is less than two years old, and the central piece has rusty patches.Besides the dogs, there is a cat, a pony, and two birds. The dogs are facing a central fountain with the two wee bids, and a big golden bone.
Victoria Woodhull Clock on time, but the wooden statue was a no show. Victoria Woodhull was born near by in Homer. She was a sexual abuse survivor, and then a 15 year old bride to a bad first husband. She ran for president in 1872. Part of the scandal was her support for "free love", which she later changed opinion. Sometime after 1976, a clock, a statue geared to appear on a balcony was built in Granville. After a time, all of it decayed. All of it has since been replaced. The second statue was carved by Granville's Larry Nadwodney *1938. Nadwodney has carved many Santa Clauses, loons, and ducks.
Diane Powell. Once Upon a Time. Granville Public Library.
Pivoting on the same spot from viewing the Woodhull Clock, one can also see this sculpture. The dog has a bandana, and the people are wearing surgical masks.

abortion monomania

Jean-Étienne Dominique Esquirol *1772, 1840† was a physician, and an early psychiatrist. He studied asylum patients, and wrote about monomania. Monomania is a partial insanity, in which a generally sane person is pathologically singularly preoccupied.

The first idea in Catholic ethics is that the means DO NOT justify the ends. As in the syllogism, false premises invalidate conclusions. Also, to promote God sincerely is to do so without lying. Jesus does not need your lies.

There has been a successful campaign by forces of politically "conservative" Catholicism to reduce all morals, and politics to only the position on abortion. All other social justice issues have become incidental, or contrary. This includes most bishops, much Catholic media, especially Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN). Any attack is of use to advance the position, any method, no regrets. By any means necessary is antithetical to Catholic (Christian) ethics, and they don't care. And "conservative" politicians, and interests (financial predominately) have benefited by this blank cheque, carte blanche.

In earlier American history, there was a movement to prohibit the use of alcohol. These prohibitionists sought laws to achieve their ends. They effected the outcomes of elections. They wanted candidates to give them lip service in order to achieve their ends. They did not care about anything else, and they did not care whether the candidate complied with the prohibition of alcohol himself. They did not care if he was competent, or corrupt. The cause for temperance was not good enough, absolute prohibition. The full force of the movement would be used against the "wets". Eventually the "drys" won. So Prohibition was in effect from 1920 to 1933, and crime increased.

Beware the company you keep

These presumptive, authoritarian, conservative voices have taught hatred towards Democrats, Catholic Democrats, and those who vote for Democrats. They came after John Kerry, and now Joe Biden. They hated Obama, and the Clintons, and before especially Teddy Kennedy. And now they pushed for Trump.

Trump is a psychopath. He is vicious. There is probably no false accusation against him, he has done far more dirty deeds which have not been made public. His personal life was, and is, filled with immorality unto depravity. He wanted the daughter of the woman, who was his second wife, aborted. Marla Maples told him she was pregnant, that was his solution. Maples did not have an abortion. Trump had raped many women, and had affairs with others. Were there other children? born, or unborn?

Donald has cheated in every endeavor he was in. No public figure has demonstrably lied as much as Trump. Everything he touches, he destroys. His career is that of destruction, he almost destroyed America. The failed self-coup of the 6th of January, failed primarily because of the idiots Trump used as insurrectionists. There are many confederates not yet known to the public.

In addition, to the fascist Hitlerian modeled flags and merchandise displayed by the Trumpfenwaffenleute, there were "Christian" flags in the mob. I am not surprised by the lunatic fringe of apocalyptic Protestant millenialists, dominionists, and other lunatics in the rabble that seiged the Capitol. There has also been Catholics who have been recruited through successful propagandising.

There were draws to making trumpsters:  the first, foremost, and strongest was race hatred, and racial resentment; those that want white supremacy. But, the religious issue that was cast to catch Catholics was abortion.

Birds of a feather...not the flock to be in

And on the issue of abortion, Catholics have made a compact with others. Not everyone is Catholic, but anyone can be a person of good will regardless if they have any religion, or none at all. The groupings of people who have the least good will towards Catholics, are those Evangelicals, who are by other tags Baptists (whatever they may call themselves), and Pentecostalists (who also sometimes identify as "non-denominational"). When they say they love Catholics, they mean only to convert them, and have absolute contempt otherwise. So, any Catholic, with the sense God gave a goose, would be extremely wary of such allies. Two of the megachurch preachers who really hate Catholics are Robert Jeffress, and John Hagee, both well known trumpsters. These are not people of good will. These vocal Protestants are anti-Catholic bigots, they would not want a second Catholic President, as much as an earlier generation had Norman Vincent Peale, and Billy Graham lead Protestants against John Kennedy. Trump's father had the family listen to Peale weekly, in person, and Donald had him officiate his first marriage. Graham's son, Franklin, is also a trumpster. Jeffress runs the First Baptist Church of Dallas, the first megachurch under the earlier W.A. Criswell, which had Billy Graham as a member, and Ted Cruz as a featured speaker. Criswell often spoke against Kennedy in Dallas, up to his assassination. Criswell later would be president of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Failed Insurrection

Ellsberg is a religious writer with a sharp wit. He has been poking T**** in a continuing series of #TolstoysTalesofTrump. Orange Nero at his insurrectionist rally sent off his minions to attack Congress. He said, he would go with them. T**** watched the event unfold on television instead.
There was this fellow in Germany who led a failed putsch, in prison he dictated a book which his secretary wrote down. The book was titled, „Mein Kampf”; T**** used to keep a copy by his bed. Here are the covers from Germany's leading news MAGAzines.

Some of the motley mob were clowns, as is their god T****.  Others were domestic terrorists, some with military, and police training.
No one should have been surprised. In T****'s insane, inauguration speech, he read the words “American carnage, and other fanatical, dystopic, bulls**t.
People pointed out how poorly defended the Capitol was, as compared to when Black Lives Matter marched. This photograph was pulled out of the memory files of unidentified forces standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
Other people remarked on how Capitol Police arrested peaceful protestors on many occasions, but arrested so few in the failed coup attempt. Religious people of conviction were especially easy to take into custody.

Fiona Hill was Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Director for European and Russian Affairs. She left before Orange Caligula's telephone call to the President of the Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelinsky.  She did speak candidly and bravely at the impeachment hearing. Fiona Hill spoke to The Daily Beast about January 6th's events:

“The president was trying to stage a coup. There was little chance of it happening, but there was enough chance that the former defense secretaries had to put out that letter, which was the final nail through that effort. They prevented the military from being involved in any coup attempt. But instead, Trump tried to incite it himself, this could have turned into a full-blown coup had he had any of those key institutions following him. Just because it failed or didn’t succeed doesn’t mean it wasn’t real.”

Fr. James Martin, SJ wrote:
Today's violence at the US Capitol, a national disgrace, is the inevitable result of the endless lies about the election spread by President Trump and his supporters.  Here we see the result of these lies, the fruit of sin: anger, hatred, discord, despair and violence. This is what sin does, especially sin on such a large scale.
And by their fruits you will know them (Mt 7:20).

Some leaders (meaning d/Democrats) took action, in order to stave off more treason, violence, and danger.

you can't go elm again

January 9th 2021. First sunny day of the year. Notice a difference?
Some of the wood grain is visible, tree was planted in 1868. Survived Dutch elm disease 1930s.
English elm stump with man, and two greyhounds.
