Circleville tower of orange squash 2023, looks the same every year. Well, i have only seen it three times; but the first time was over 30 years ago. I do enjoy the sight.

After the Circleville visit, we went a few miles south to Logan Elm State Memorial. Great place to sit and have lunch. Weather was beautiful, the trees were in fall colors. The park is surrounded by farm land.

There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature. This has called on me for revenge. I have sought it: I have killed many: I have fully glutted my vengeance. For my country, I rejoice at the beams of peace. But do not harbour a thought that mine is the joy of fear. Logan never felt fear. He will not turn on his heel to save his life. Who is there to mourn for Logan? Not one.

I put a spot of different color in an area i erased some graffiti from the sign. The tree where he spoke lasted until a storm in 1964.

When the leaves change color, the color becomes brilliant when the sun hits at the right angle.

Waiting to get weighed in Circleville, a ton of squash. There was a pumpkin train. 

the pumpkins have arrived

We were there during Wednesday's weigh-in. It is a four day festival. Behind the woman in light blue are the pumpkins that were already weighed. I think, i remember the announcer say there were forty to be weighed, and he couldn't remember that many before.  Eight weighed more than a thousand pounds. Sometimes massive pumpkins are ugly, these were all pretty good looking. Those in the foreground are available for purchase. [foto:jz]  previous visit [click]

Bob (and Jo) Liggett, who have won many times (15) before, now have the state record at 2,388.5 pounds. When the weight was shown and announced, cheers and applause quickly followed.

There were many people milling around. One fellow had this patch sewed on his denim jacket.

Ite ad Joseph

Hocking and Pickaway counties are two of several counties that have only one Catholic church, usually at the county seat. I was at St. John's in Logan, and the priest told me, he thought the best glass in the Columbus diocese was St. Joseph in Circleville. Yesterday, we were in Circleville. "Ite ad Joseph" means go to Joseph. Joseph is the universal patron. When you do not know who will intercede for you in prayer, the answer is "Ite ad Joseph".

Most (if not all) glass there is F.X. Zettler Munich. One of the best visual scenes from the New Testament is the Flight to Egypt. I have not seen that much in churches. This church has several windows of Joseph. The only scene missing was Joseph as carpenter.

"Ave Maria gratia plena", the words of Gabriel to Mary, "Hail Mary full of grace". This is the top of the Annunciation window.

There is much iconography in Christian art. Often, the two keys to heaven and earth tell you the symbols are for St. Peter. Here the fish reminds us, he was a fisherman.

 

 They have three small above the doors between the nave and the narthex. They are different in style from the other windows. Don't know if they are Zettler windows. Some of the windows have Zettler maker marks, i did not see them on these.  [blogger has taken over the spacing and positioning of fotos and text, i am not adept enough to meddle with the html]

Well, the Circleville Pumpkin Show began in 1903. Most people know about Circleville on that account. It is a small town in south central Ohio, surpassing 13,000 in population. Circleville is the county seat of Pickaway, and may  be getting some migrants from ever expanding Columbus. Year round the pumpkin presence is noted by this water tower. It is on the south side of town. Supra was my first sight and snap of it.

Circleville began in 1810 inside the circular archaeological earthworks of the prehistoric Hopewell Indian culture. In the center of town there was built an octagonal courthouse with streets radiating from it. People began griping about the city plan, they wanted to square the circle. From 1838 to 1856 Circleville Squaring Company did so. 

 

At the end of this period, George Gregg built an octagon residence in 1855-6. He must have considered the original courthouse. I have seen fotos of the inside, there is a beautiful spiral staircase inside. The woodwork was also quality throughout. The house is called the M.M. Crites' House. It has been vacant for years. Walmart wanted it torn down. A public group moved the house a half mile away in 2004.

 And it is very near the pumpkin tower.

There is tall grass around the house, and a crop of corn was harvested and the stalks cut. The approach to photograph this was easy.

As we were walking an alley parallel to Court Street in Circleville Ohio, we met the church warden of St. Philip Episcopalian as angelus bells were ringing. He saw us walking our hounds, and me taking fotos. He has two huskies, and he invited the four of us to see the inside. He was very welcoming, and informative.

He showed us a pew, that has a back that can be flipped to the other side of the bench, so that people could talk face to face.

They had all the windows reset, and cleaned. A triple window is behind the altar. It was made in 1897, and no studio marks were found.

 

Both Karma and Cassius decided to take a wee rest.

This is their second church, the first was built in 1832, this one in 1866. St. Philip's is the oldest church building operating in Pickaway County. It sits on Mt. Gilboa, and had Indian artifacts found in 1819. It is a lovely small parish. The pastor was in the seminary with the priest across the street.

St. Joseph's has this pre-WWI Munich made window of the Good Shepherd above the central door leading into the narthex.

It was close to astronomical noon when this foto was snapped.

 

Pumpkin Town

The first, and last, time i went to Circleville's Pumpkin Festival was 1994. One of the things i remember was the pumpkin tower. It is a four day event, i thought Wednesday would not be so crowded. I tried to get a good foto, it was crowded all around the pumpkin and gourd displays.

Gus Smithhisler is the squashcarver of central Ohio. It is college football season, and many Ohioans are fanatics about the team from the largest school in the state. He was carving their mascot, Brutus Buckeye. I mentioned Cassius and me, have met many dogs named Brutus, but only one named Caesar.

I thought the pumpkin weigh in was Tuesday, well Wednesday around noon they were still lifting the pumpkins on to the scale.  The crowd was so thick at the main intersection by the Pickaway Courthouse, i could not see much. They had girls paint the pumpkins with weight, and grower. About an hour later, the pumpkins were displayed with the trophy. Steven Thornhille's pumpkin was the champion at 1,850½ pounds. I heard people talk about getting some seeds.

Eric Henn fooled me with this trompe l'oeil mural. I saw Eric Grohe's mural in Massillon, and thought this was done by Eric G, but no—it is by Eric H. People rested in the shade, on the stoop. Others had themselves photographed as to be part of the mural scene. He has painted many water towers, and petroleum tanks in realistic style, but unlike the eye fooling gigantic wall mural supra.

Near the courthouse intersection was a tent for the Democracy, at the corner of the courthouse there was a tent for the county's anti-Democracy party. One of theirs is the present governor, but they were advertising some yahoo with a cowboy hat and beard.

I have seen county fairs smaller. The center of town was a carnival, full of rides, games, merchandise, food wagons, and other vendors. One idiot had a trump won flag attached above his booth like an idiot's antenna. There were a few trumpster tee shirts wearing clods walking among the crowd, but there were of those zombies, and they tended not to be obscene.
