more Canton

Canton is well represented in its Arts District.  Interspersed with the paeans to football is other art.

There is this great rubber rhinoceros of Goodyear tires by local artist Patrick Buckohr.  Near by is a building [Hub Art Factory] used by artists, who have painted, and then repainted the outside walls. Amongst the current images are the three below, left to right.
Fredrick Allen Hampton, *30 August 1948 – 4 December 1969†
Deputy chairman Black Panther Party assassinated while sleeping by Chicago Police, and Cook County State's Attorney's Office, under co-ordination by the FBI. This is an example of what is termed "extrajudicial killing". A major motion picture has been filmed, and is currently delayed by conditions of the covid plague. Part of the movie's exterior scenes were filmed in Cleveland, on West 65th, in December 2019.
Next to that portrait on the wall of the building is Bill Watterston's Calvin and Hobbes.
Next to Calvin and Hobbes is Ruth Bader Ginsburg—We Dissent.
Joseph Close. part of Garbage to Glory. 2007.
The arts district is just behind the center of town, which has monumental and new bank buildings, the county courthouse, and the church of William McKinley. Outside the courthouse is this garbage can container. It has a bricklayer, and his helper laying bricks. From a distance, he stands en garde like a fencer.
On the courthouse's pediment there is a multi-figure sculpture of Commerce, Justice, Agriculture and Industry. There is no attribution of the artist. At the point of attachment of the plough, there is an opportunistic plant growing.

First Methodist Episcopal 1881, in 1968 Church of the Savior United Methodist, and absorbing Saint Paul's United Methodist in 2014 is now called Crossroads United Methodist. The arch is diagonally between the church and the courthouse.

  1. I thought, "those angels on the Courthouse tower look like the angel Moroni on the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City. However when I looked for images of Moroni, I found out for the first time that The Church of LDS does not portray angels with wings--including that gold statue in SLCity. LDS founder Joe Smith apparently declared unequivocally "Angels do not have wings!" Who knew?!
