Hermes (Mercury)

Pennsylvania Railroad had a station on Euclid Avenue at E. 55th in Cleveland. Some years ago it was demolished. Some of the ornamental figures are now outside the Rockefeller Greenhouse. This one sits proudly on someone's porch.

 

I recently found this. In so many places  buildings of architectural interest are destroyed. Some items in, or on the buildings were well made, and worth saving and seeing. Many churches, and other buildings are gone. Some people remember objects, and wonder where are they. Sometimes one can come across them. Saloons, and restaurants sometimes have miscellaneous stuff just so there is decoration for customers to look at. And some stuff is just destroyed. I have been on jobs, where the order is "everything in the dumpsters now".

With covid, the Little League season was not.  See the grass on the sandlot.

 It is autumn, and the climbing ivy changes color. Broadview, Old Brooklyn, 27 September.

In the Greek Garden, there is this very fruitful tree. Much fruit is already fallen. It is sweet, but very bad. Ginkgo takes twenty years to fruit, and produces greatly. It is mildly toxic. When they fall, and get smashed, the stink stays until they wash away. Most people keep the male trees avoiding this.

 

Near the Italian Garden a walking group went for group portraits.

2020 Miscellany #15

Breonna Taylor

Taylor was an emergency room technician in Louisville Kentucky.   On 13 March 2020, three policeman broke into her apartment. She was shot dead. Her family wanted answers, which were not forthcoming. A demonstration of protesters on 28 May turned violent. Part of the impetus was the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police on 25 May.

This painting is on the wall of an apartment building that is listed for demolition. A stretch of buildings on West 25th are to be torn down.

My ballot came Saturday. I filled it out during half time of the Notre Dame game. Going downtown, Sunday morning, saw a flashing portable sign telling which exits to take to get to the Board of Elections. There were orange metal signs on the street. Had to exercise the franchise to do my effort to save the Democracy. Ohio has a Repuke Secretary of State who only allows drop off boxes at BofE property. In Texas the Repuke governor only wants one box per county, doesn't matter if the population is in the hundreds or millions. So Cuyahoga's additional box is on the sidewalk of the BofE. Repukes want to limit the vote, as in 2000 when the vote became 5 to 4.

The park was designated as a National Recreation Area in 1974, and a national park in 2000. But, there were already parks within the area before. A good deal of building was accomplished by the Civilian Conservation Corps under President Franklin Roosevelt, who had to deal with Hoover's Depression which caused great unemployment and suffering. Here, and there, are markers speaking to the situation. So many of the projects undertaken under Roosevelt are still being used. Truly, the United States would be bereft of much useful progress that occurred under Roosevelt's administration. Many things built after his time are gone. Roosevelt was a builder, today we have a destroyer as president.

nota bene: Blogger has changed its composing template. At first, it allowed to post slightly bigger fotos, it has stopped that. Now, every change i see is WORSE. It less responsive to personal formatting, and slower. It has been some time since they tinkered with it. But here is the rule of the business model to users and customers: first make something good, then continue to make it worse.

U.S.S. Cod is a WWII submarine that is now a museum ship in Cleveland.

 

For Cuyahoga County voters, a necessary and easy act of patriotism: accessible on E. 30th between Euclid and Chester; drop off ballot applications, and later completed ballots. Ohio's Secretary of State, Frank LaRose, will not allow more than one such box in a county. He is a Republican, and on a state level, Ohio has been a one party state.

Now it is time to dry your summer garden herbs for later use, basil pictured.

It has been reported, that Parma High before 1936 was nicknamed 'Greyhounds'.  Currently the school nickname is 'Redmen', and it may be on its way out.
