the guy from Argentina vs. the Republican Party

In this corner, the boy genius of the Republican Party.

"The guy is from Argentina, they haven't had real capitalism in Argentina. They have crony capitalism in Argentina. They don't have a true free enterprise system." — Congressman Paul Ryan, boy genius of the Republican Party quoted in an hour long interview with reporters and editors of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The article was mostly concerned with a casino. He also told them he wants to chair the House Ways and Means Committee. He has not made a decision to run for the presidency, and is waiting until after the November election to say.

Yes, i remember the Vice-President, Joseph Biden, in October 2012 making Ryan cringe. Ryan could only comfort himself by drinking water. Joseph Biden did what Barack Obama did not do. He challenged nearly every lie that his opponent uttered. He made Ryan uncomfortable. He showed the Republican his hypocrisy.

A season earlier, Sister Simone Campbell, of the social justice 'lobby' NETWORK, argued for a 'Faithful Budget'. She and a group of Catholic sisters travelled across the Mississippi to the Potomac (Nuns on the Bus), across the rustbelt to the citadel of government. The journey started at Des Moines, Iowa on June 18th, and they continued to the nation's capital. On the second day, there was a stop at Janesville, Wisconsin. Janesville is the home of the Republican budget guru, Rep. Paul Ryan.

Now, Biden, Campbell, and the guy from Argentina are co-religionists of Paul Ryan, supposedly. He can not defeat them in an argument, or in sincerity. Ryan is a propagandist whose philosophy comes from Ayn Rand, whom he made his staff read. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount discourse is a few sentences. Dropping Rand on your foot, would make it smart. Reading Rand has a contrary effect.

"Ayn Rand, more than anyone else, did a fantastic job of explaining the morality of capitalism, the morality of individualism. And this to me is what matters the most: it is not enough to say that President Obama’s taxes are too big or that the health care plan does not work, or this or that policy reason. It is the morality of what is occurring right now; and how it offends the morality of individuals working for their own free will, to produce, to achieve, to succeed that is under attack." — Congressman Paul Ryan

One of the many things that Pope Francis is doing, is lessening the strength of the Republican Party of the United States, and he is doing so by not referring to the party at all. Francis is speaking of the programme of Jesus. His programme is not that of Mammon. I am calling it, cognitive dissonance. He has some of them rattled; but i suspect many "Catholics" have been challenged as their fellow Republicans have been. Do you remember some of the old fire emergency boxes that had a wee hammer on a chain, and the words "Break Glass"?
____________________________________
postscriptum: Immediately after this posted, i was struck by an additional thought. We know Ryan is ambitious, there is a particular disgusting quality about his person. I saw this type at university, a snotty, mean smugness based not on ability but on assumed privilege. These were frat rats, they were not academically solid, but themselves expected to receive good grades and were contemptuous of scholarship. The bread was buttered for them, and they had no respect for those that gathered grain, or baked the ovens. A particularly nasty duo would be Paul Ryan, and the unctuous lying creep Eric Cantor. What an awful ticket — Ryan, Cantor. Both are young, and are shills for the grossest of greed. Both lie without limit. They have vitality, audacity, and no honor — a dream ticket in the sick mind of the Republicans to go for youth. They would go on to great defeat, but the thought of them in power makes me want to wretch bile from a gall bladder that does not exist.

Miracle Requested

La gente con la bandera, Patrona y Protectora de los Inmigrantes

"We need a miracle to help Ricardo Ramos and his family". — Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, Executive Director of HOLA, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in NE Ohio focusing on Latino Outreach, Advocacy and Community Organizing. Painesville, Ohio.

Before 1890, there was no federal immigration entity. Immigration was transferred from one federal department to another from 1890 onward. The last transfer was to this terror induced creation called "Homeland Security". Immigration Act of 1891 gave the Treasury Department a Commission of Immigration, it went through several departments: Commerce and Labor 1903, Labor 1913, and Justice 1940. From 1933 the constituent agency in those departments was the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). For years, resident aliens went to the post office to pick up an alien address card, fill it out, and mail it in; so that addresses were on file. Often, people had their child (often born in this new country) go to the post office and get the card. The child growing up in an English speaking world, would be familiar with the term "alien" from the picture show, and later television, and wonder why in his every other encounter with that word, it would be in the context "Killer Aliens from Mars Attack Earth", or something else similarly stupid. Then one year it was no longer necessary.

Then later, Osama bin Laden, a foreign assassin well outside the country attacked America in a co-ordinated, and dramatically choreographed assault. This gave a new and extremist régime, which had usurped the government, the opportunity to re-organise the government and create a new apparatus as a response to 'terror'. INS as of March 1, 2003 was in this new cabinet department, and was divided into three new structures:  U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Yes, immigrant labor is to be filed with the attacks of assassins. This particular case, which has come to my knowledge, falls under the survey of ICE.

Years before, a DC-3, contracted with the United States Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS), on the morning of 28 January 1948, ignited over the hills east of Coalinga, California. It was overloaded by weight, and by passengers, and past time for a required, safety inspection. Woody Guthrie read the accounts in the papers, and was disturbed that the Mexicans were listed only as deportees. To him, it was as if, it was a parting final insult. Guthrie composed a poem, that later became a song [click]. Two full generations later, how far have we advanced?

Immigrant labor is not respected in this country. Romney said, "corporations are people". He lied, labor is people; people that are taken advantage of, and discarded. Now we have a legal Democratic government, and they are deporting even more people. Politics, and the force of bureaucracy overrules people. This new power was created by fear.

No Próspero Año Nuevo.
Ricardo Ramos [center] with family and friends at St. Casimir Cleveland
Ricardo Ramos has been a resident nurseryman in Lake County. He, and his wife, and their three children live in a mobile home park in Perry. He is been in the US for some 16 years. He was stopped while driving, and his papers were not in order. Since coming to Ohio, he has become a father to three children whom were born citizens, or as some would say "anchor babies". The pay he exchanged for his labor, is not great. He and his family have given more to the economy than they have received, but that is the system. The government wants him out of the United States before the crystal ball hits Times Square, and the calendar turns.

The family has asked for the intercession of Our Lady of Czestochowa, and Cleveland's St. Casimir community. They became aware of the Miracle that the parishioners of St. Casimir believed happened. On the day of eviction, the parish was dedicated to Our Lady of Czestochowa. A parishioner had a dream that Our Lady asked him (and them) not to leave. After 139 Sundays praying outside the church, as a parish community, they again got to go back inside. The right to return.

In this time of the year, the days of Christmas, many are guided by emotion and introspective conscience to be charitable to those caught by misfortune. This season beckons to men and women of good will to intervene. This is the lesson that the great novelist, Charles Dickens, wished to convey to the disinterested whom would have the powers of the establishment deal cold-heartedly and perfunctory for those in misery. A Christmas Carol is always with us, in Dickens' tale the Ghost of Christmas Present told Ebenezer, that he had over 1800 brothers; now he has over 2,000.

This family is part of our community, and has been for years. This is a cry for mercy, and justice, so that a family may stay united. This benefits not only one family, but our society as a whole.  Perhaps, a quick television spotlight and investigation can stir some human response for mercy and justice. The power of a presentation on television focuses attention, and interest on a subject. Those at Saint Casimir's were aided by the occasional audio, video, and print story. This story of the Ramos family can also benefit by media coverage. We know the powers of the establishment sometimes change course if they are shown the light (or are embarrassed).

WEWS TV-5 has run three recent stories, one on Sunday, December 22nd at 6 pm; another on Christmas Day at 11 pm; and a third yesterday at 11 pm [click]. If anyone can appeal to a Representative, or a Senator, or the President, or someone who can intervene, please do so. If Ricardo Ramos leaves, ask for intervention so that he can return.

rustbelt dialect(ic)

I have been asked, why do you use the name “a voice from the rustbelt? Well, it places me culturally. I have seen other maps that include concentration of factories, coal, iron ore, and steel, or as Billy Joel sang about Allentown, “what was real, Iron and coke and chromium steel”. That was the result of Reaganomics and the resultant recession, which set up the pattern of the destruction of the working class, and the demonisation of the poor, and the ascendancy of the Republican Party in success and madness.
A few years ago the Harvard Dialect Survey was tabulated from over 30,000 speakers of English in the United States.  One hundred twenty-two questions were used, and responses were charted to show the geographic distribution of answers. Sunday, the New York Times posted an interactive quiz [clicky] of twenty-five, and the collected responses were transformed into a temperature map [like one sees in a newspaper]. Blue is cold, red is hot; blue is unlike your usage, red mirrors your usage. It spotlights the most similar cities indicative of your speech, and the three most dissimilar. I tried the test several times, and the questions came from a pool. A few answers are elicited from a very small geographic area*. Other more general responses† shade and blend the color assignments. Depending on the questions asked, and which [sometimes more than one choice applies] of the multiple choices one selects, the shading would shift; but not very greatly.

I had a shift that included Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. I had a shift that included New Orleans, and Baton Rouge [one answer in a small group of questions can throw the results elsewhere]. I had a shift that included Detroit and Toledo. The most common shift i had was Rockford, Grand Rapids, and Cleveland. I had a Cleveland, Akron, and Pittsburgh too. The Pacific West, the Great Basin, and New England were always cold. A couple of answers would yellow up the south, outside of Florida.

christmas tires

Pete Seeger used to sing a version of the beginning of the third chapter of Ecclesiastes:

All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven.  A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. A time to kill, and a time to heal. A time to destroy, and a time to build.  A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance.  A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather. A time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.  A time to get, and a time to lose. A time to keep, and a time to cast away.  A time to rend, and a time to sew. A time to keep silence, and a time to speak.  A time of love, and a time of hatred. A time of war, and a time of peace.

We speak of an holiday season, or the Christmas season. For some it is always a season of opportunity. In an inner city neighborhood on the day before Christmas, on this particular street there was not much traffic. On the street are three churches, and an elementary school, and lot after lot, after lot of where a house is no more. It had been snowing, and the roads not touched much. There is tree lawn after tree lawn that can accept the gift of someone's trash the garbage companies do not want. Sometimes it is construction/demolition materials, and this festive day it is car tires.

late clouds

This weekend, it rained. Nearly three inches fell. In the late morning the rain passed, and the sun broke through, at times very brightly. In the last few minutes of daylight, low wispy clouds past by. They were pink, and some changed to charcoal smokiness in hue, and then back to salmon flesh color. The corner has an aeroplane contrail. The picture only suggests, it does not capture.

a day of 50° after weeks of cold

During the last hour of light yesterday, in Cuyahoga Heights went for a walk and bird watch; a lot of mallards, ring billed gulls, robins. Interestingly, there were great blue herons in cross flight. I saw six in the air at once as they went through and fro by the river bank and overhead. They were active, and there were a variety of raptor up high, one large one had to be a young eagle, not yet bald. Most all were not in position to pose. Many were clearly visible in movement, and in distance.

Gaudete

¡Viva el Papa!

Cardinal Burke pegged the meter. In some analog meters, there is a needle behind glass; to the left is '0', and the gradations continued to the right, at the end of the scale there is a measurable limit value. At times, the input could be so strong that the meter is destroyed. Raymond Burke pegged the meter in several categories. Politically, he was very active in promoting the Republican Party and attacking the Democratic Party. This went outside any pastoral activity. Within the church, he was an "Americaniser", by this i mean, he wanted to control the diocese as a corporate capitalist and tyrant. The bishop was a Leviathan. Burke was an enemy to the nationality parishes, they were only a source of income; only the bishop's opinion mattered in all matters. This country has many such bishops, Burke was the most flamboyant in the display and presentation of his person. He dressed himself in the most extreme, and extravagant regalia. How could that alone not suggest how ill suited he is to be a priest?

Pope Francis is addressing an internal problem of the church in this country. There is an extreme imbalance between the ordinary (the presiding bishop) and the People of God. Here in Cleveland, we have an horrible bishop in this regard. Richard Lennon has caused much disharmony, and ill feeling. His chief endeavor was the reduction of parishes in a cold, calculated, vicious way. People are quite parochial, they can not see much outside of their parish. And there is the great problem of church governance, which the local press would never allow to be discussed, and few parishioners would speak on.

Burke was such an extremist. With his removal from this curial position, such individuals such as himself, and Lennon, and other tyrants will not become bishops. The problem is these individuals. They act as pharoa of old, they consider themselves the only Catholic in the diocese.

So a basic question of polity is what constitutes the church in an area, what is the unit? The diocese (a political sub geographic borrowed from the Roman empire), or the parish (constituted by Jesus, when he speaks of "two or three gathered together in my name").

The average Catholic only relates to his parish. The sacramental, and communal life is done within the parish. He has little interest or concern of another parish. So the parishes are not in the practice of joining together to challenge a power (and money) grabbing bishop.

We, in Cleveland and Akron, successfully appealed to Rome (and Rome with a stacked curia, not very receptive to parishioners) and had eleven of eleven appeals against Bishop Lennon's non-canonical suppressions upheld. Lennon was even too much for the church structure to bear. We are still stuck with him, but he has little respect here, and in Rome.

With this humbling of Burke, and his loss of influence, future supreme jerks may not be inflicted upon people. These incidents are lessons for the learning.

I read the news yesterday, but i saw something was dated 15 December. That was Sunday, the third Sunday in Advent, Gaudete Sunday. The introit for the Mass begins, "Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete". "Rejoice in the Lord always: again I say, rejoice".

Yes, Rejoice. Perhaps, our Pope has a sense of humour. I remember at Mass, at St. Stanislaus Cleveland, Father William Gulas speaking about the rose garment. There are only two days on the church calendar which the vestments can be pink (rose, is the liturgical term). The one is Gaudete Sunday, and it is not required to refrain from the more somber violet, where rose is the option. Fr. Willie, as he enjoyed being called, was not particularly enthusiastic about the pink threads. He said the ladies in the parish enjoyed it, and they found it in the attic. And it was an old vestment, of old rose, and not bright pink. Well, Burke enjoys expensive and extravagant dress up [click].

Also, to much of the American public that is regarding this news about Burke only note his positions on the pelvic issues. Burke has recently gone on EWTN and criticised the pope. Burke is a favorite of those whom approve of the term "culture warrior". But Burke is an ecclesiastical tyrant, that enjoys the theatre of being the center of his own autocratic imperial court.

And to-day, is the 17th of December. Pope Francis is 77 years old. To-day is the birthday of Ludwig Beethoven. Beethoven wrote a choral symphony on Schiller's Ode to Joy. [click, and click]

Bleak December

I was driving to downtown Cleveland, to see the lights on Public Square. I went a long way on a mostly empty St. Clair. I stopped at the red lights, if i had not, no one would have known (i think that stretch is absent of the expanding ticket surveillance system). It was clear, there was no falling snow, and no road slop to fly onto the windows; because it was clear, it was even colder. Clouds of breath came forth from pedestrians. Even with new lights, the colored l.e.d., it is depressing. The casino does not make the square more festive.

The phrase that rolled about in my mind was 'bleak December'. I knew that was a lyric from poem, and song. Winter has come early this year. It has been extra cold for more than three weeks. It is a bad time for the poor, and it is of little joy to a great many more.

The first line of the second stanza of Poe's 1845 Raven:
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
Edgar Allan Poe is gloomy, and macabre. That poem is about death, sorrow, madness, and contemplation of suicide, and mythology tinged with the supernatural. I am centered just to the midnight dreary in December, the moment it is set.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a slightly earlier contemporary poet in England of fabulous, and dark romanticism. He has a quatrain from 1806, that he did not expand. The first half is:
Come, come thou bleak December wind,
And blow the dry leaves from the tree!
This was a reference to the third stanza of Waly, Waly (a Scot cry of lament).
Now Arthur's Seat
Sall be my bed,
The sheets sall ne'er be 'filed by me;
Saint Anton's well sall be my drink;
Since my true Love has forsaken me.
Marti'mas wind, when wilt thou blaw,
And shake the green leaves aff the tree?
O gentle Death, when wilt thou come?
For of my life I am wearìe.
From the second stanza, there developed the song, "The Water is Wide".

Waly, Waly goes back to the XVIIth century, by one account; and to the XVIth in another; and perhaps further still. The Catholic references about Glasgow are pre-Protestant. I can see some Anglicans talk about St. Anton's Well, and Martinmas (11November); but Calvinist Presbyterians? Martinmas tide became after Indian summer in America.

"In the Bleak Midwinter" is a poem, and then a Christmas carol. Christina Rossetti wrote this prior to 1872, and it was published in 1904. There is a definite bleakness about the season.

human rights day

“Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings.” ― Nelson Mandela.

“Poverty is the worst form of violence.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

oooooooooooooo~~~~~~~~~~~~~~oooooooooooooo~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt.
January 20, 1937.

“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” ― Dom Hélder Pessoa Câmara

“Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.” ― Herman Melville 1854.

“There is always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.” ― Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle

“America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves.... It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five

“If you go out into the real world, you cannot miss seeing that the poor are poor not because they are untrained or illiterate but because they cannot retain the returns of their labor. They have no control over capital, and it is the ability to control capital that gives people the power to rise out of poverty.” ― Muhammad Yunus, Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty

cops and guns

Something never to say to a cop, or someone with a gun:  “Oh, you’re gonna shoot me?”.
You are not speaking to an equal. The authorities do not tolerate sarcasm. As i have suggested before, many police do not allow you any rights, and that includes living.

On December 6, 2013, in Alamo Heights Texas an University of the Incarnate Word cop, Chris Carter, killed an honors student, Robert Cameron Redus, off campus. A witness said, “He emptied the gun on him”.

the face of evil, Dick Dastardly

All that is missing is the Simon Legree's top hat and cape, and Snidely Whiplash's moustaches; or the horns, hooves, barbed tail, and pitchfork. Remember there was a character called Dick Dastardly?

Dick Cheney is the most evil man in US history. People once often pointed to Charles Manson as the embodiment of evil; he had his followers kill nine people, and his planned race war (or what ever the hell it was) was only a demented fantasy. Cheney worked years to achieve access to the greatest earthly powers. He has the blood of hundreds of thousands on his hands.

There are several [more than can fit to mention in this short essay] vignettes of episodic evil with cheney. He was all for the Viet Nam war, he got five deferments to make sure he didn't go. He stopped filing when he turned twenty-six, and was too old to be drafted. As he said, "I had other priorities in the 60's than military service. I don't regret the decisions I made". In August 2002 he told the world, through a speech, that the country was going to war with Iraq. Mid-March, his then puppet, gwbjr did start it on the false premises that had been invented, and no voice to the contrary was going to be respected. Often cheney was reported hiding "in an undisclosed location". That was bullshit too.

Cheney got drunk while hunting and shot his buddy, Harry Whittington, in the face. The local sheriff was told to go away. He had his buddy publicly say to the world, that it was own fault that he, himself, got shot.

While living in Tejas, he was head of Halliburton. Halliburton invented hydraulic fracturing, 'fracking' (exclusive patent 1949), later cheney as vice-president planned in secret with the oil companies on energy policy. Cheney had made sure over the years the government gave contracts to Halliburton. Halliburton, under cheney, did business with the "axis of evil countries" such as Libya, Iraq, Iran, and et cetera. O, and constitutionally a president and his vice-president must come from different states. gwbjr was from Tejas. Cheney decided the best running mate for gwbjr was cheney.

We all know he is "heartless", recently he received an human heart from a dead person. He has put out a book about the marvels of such medicine, he does not consider the dead man.

Recently, Madiba, Nelson Mandela died. Cheney considered him a "terrorist". Cheney was in Congress in 1986, when Congress over rode a Reagan veto for the US to stand against apartheid, and for the freeing of South Africa's political prisoners. Naturally, he voted with Reagan and against the world. He has no regrets about it, nor anything he has done.

Cheney was always on the wrong side of history, yet he is always a lying talking-head on television, and is quoted in papers and magazines. He has planted stories, and then commented to reporters on what those stories he "read" said. This thread of duplicity has been constant. He outed Valerie Plame as a covert CIA spy, other people have gone to prison over that sort of thing.

Laws don't apply to cheney, and his kind. He is an international war criminal, and in some countries he could be arrested, hell, if other countries followed his suit, he could be captured (extraordinary rendition) and tortured (water boarded) in a real undisclosed location. He approves of such activities. It would be poetic justice.

Let us not forget his spawn. One is a lesbian and has been in a public spat with the other daughter, Lizard Cheney, who lives in Virginia and feels entitled to be senator from Wyoming. She speaks the same evil as her sire, but has not much accomplished. She had been a paid liar on Fox, and before that the bushes had created positions for her in the federal government.

I remember a priest telling a story of how he refused a family's request of having "My Way" played at a funeral. See, a Christian is not supposed to be prideful in himself. A Christian is supposed to follow the Way of Jesus. Lucifer lost Heaven for his pride of having his way. Cheney, and Lucifer always made it sure they could say "I did it my way". Cheney was always self assured while lying, and wrong. He has never regretted anything, not even his lack of political etiquette. He told Senator Leahy, on the Senate floor, "go f@$# yourself". Leahy had criticised cheney over Halliburton (his source of mammon). Cheney had no regrets, he went on radio and said, "That's sort of the best thing I ever did".

Some people posit Hitler as the face of evil. It must be "sweeps week", one of the local television news stations is promoting a piece by that name, face of evil. They show a wax head of Hitler. Hitler had a sense of satanic theatre, cheney is blood thirsty, manipulative, but not theatrical. All men die, when cheney croaks, the sound of a colossal sizzle will emanate from Hell.
