snowy owl

Well, it is a gray day. Sunnier days are better for foto snapping. A nieceling gave me a book on birding spots, on top of the cover there was a snowy owl. Sometimes when they visit Cleveland and Lorain, they sit on the lake's breakwall, relatively far away. This one has been sitting near the traffic circle at Edgewater on an utility pole. I am reminded of St. Rocco's greasy pole. And, "I am a lineman for the county".  This bird has been in a few spots yards away, these past days. Another has been around Lorain's long pier, and a few others are near the lake shore too. This one made herself very available to photographers.

also at Edgewater:  someone at the He-Man Woman-Haters Club doesn't spell well.

zombie in search of brains

on Superior, west of E. 110th [December 23]

This graffito to the left of this spells “KONQR”.  Two years ago, Harvey Lewis, was caught by the police in Louisville Kentucky with paint on his hands. Lewis had spray paint cans, gloves, and cameras with records of past paint escapades.

I have seen throughout Cleveland the tags: konqr, enor, vayne, dozer and others. I thought they were all local idiots. Now, i have read, people do “bombings” about the country. Train cars, underpasses, vacant buildings are frequent targets. So there are other cities with these same letters.

Saint Colman (which is whiter in actuality) The ceramic mosaic has several buildings portrayed. I recognise most of the churches, and the Lorain Carnegie Library, and not most of the other buildings.
St. Stephen is darker than this, except in very bright morning golden hour when it is buff. I thought it was St. Patrick, because of the coloring, but it is St. Stephen.

Maintenance is always a problem. This may have begun by a lawn mower, but when once crumbling begins, crumbling advances.

on the promenade

Benjamin (Franklin) with Friend

Lakewood Park has the limestone solstice steps, which begins at the brick promenade that stands above Lake Erie. We were out with the hounds to-day, because the temperature climbed to the low 50s. A very warm day before Christmas. Many people were at the park to-day, some walking their hounds.

One fellow was with Benjamin comes to this spot, from which the football stadium can be seen, on the day before Cleveland plays. He recounted the 1964 NFL championship game in which the Browns defeated the best quarterback in history, and the rest of the Baltimore Colts. His father worked for the plejndjilar, and he met some of the Browns including Frank Ryan, and Gary Collins. Collins told him next year would be even better. He also spoke of that game next year when the Green Bay Packers beat Cleveland.

Much work being done at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Cleveland. A small part of the work includes: front doors are out to be refurbished, the old steps were removed, and new ones have replaced them, which have wiring to melt snow and ice. One must take in consideration, that, when a parish wants to spend its own money for improvements, they have to get approval from the bishop.

Homeless at Malachi

Community West Foundation's installation of Timothy Schmalz's Homeless Jesus [Matthew 25] collection is continuing. [click] Some of them may be installed by Christmas. In total, there are six. Rome is the only city with all six. Cleveland will also have six.

midday, mid-December light around University Circle

One of the great (really) places to walk with or without hounds is around Cleveland Art Museum, Fine Arts Garden, Wade Lagoon.  A truly beautiful building is this Methodist church, which has gone through a few name changes; although it is also called the Holy Oil Can.  We are not at Mont‑Saint‑Michel Bretagne, but this is a Cleveland landmark, and the one to see in University Circle. Yet, some point at Frank Gehry's monstrosity.

In September, the Art Museum had chalk drawings on sidewalks. This is a remnant, with added paw prints.

photographs of abandoned places #35

Wellman (and others) 1901-2007

very pleased to see this span of windows whole and unscripted

Samuel Wellman knew how to make machines that made steel. Before coming to Cleveland he invented the open-hearth furnace. He, his brother, and a friend opened a large factory (Wellman Seaver) on Central Avenue in Cleveland. They made equipment for steel mills, and handling devices for iron ore, and steel. Soon, they worked with George Hulett. Hulett had invented an iron ore unloader in 1898, which were to be important along the Great Lakes. In 1954 McDowell bought the company, and the building is marked McDowell Wellman. They were sold in 1978, and again in 1988. Production stopped. Cleveland Track Material then made railroad rails here until they were bought, and this factory was then closed in 2007.

It rained last night, and roof run off found holes to drip through.
I've seen this graffiti guy's work before. This has been here long enough to be peeling. Saw one newspaper from 2011. Guessing, most of the graffiti is not very recent.

The previous graffiti was inside this building.
