The Asian [read Chinese] lantern promotion at the zoo has ended. One walkway had large sea animals in a stained glass like presentation. Thought it was well done. Overall, after a few years they are running out of ideas. another walkway that looked good was an ancient Egyptian. The zodiac animals were almost like shrine sculptures, also looking good, and dragons were plentiful. What used to be called Newburgh is called Slavic Village. Most of the Slavs are gone. The area has had major economic deprivation, and vandalism. There is a yearly weekend art event called "Rooms to Let". The first few years, houses that were to be demolished were open for artists to create something. People were allowed to see the finish works. Now it has shifted to the area around Our Lady of Lourdes, in the former Czech hub of town. Broadway & East 55th were like the central business center for Newburgh. Most of the store fronts are vacant, apartments are vacant, many houses are in bad repair. Over one store window was this panel, the only with a Slavonic (probably) theme, could be Czech.
