2025 Miscellany #19

It was cloudy, and the sundial was not operating, but looking good.
A sign at Holden Arboretum (a non-govermental entity) includes information from the Forest Service.  This mentions climate change.  Under the current regime, such knowledge is to be removed from government properties, and people are asked to snitch.  Such signage may become rare, but private organisations are not currently forced to comply.
Holden Arboretum has a skeleton decorated pool that also includes a Jaws theme. Some greyhounds are not intimidated.
September 24th, men were finishing up monument placing in the Lebanese Garden.  Some young cypresses were planted.  After they left, beaver(s) had construction work to do. They fell older, non-cypress, trees.  Foto snapped on the morning of the 25th.

2025 Miscellany #18

Severence Hall garage entrance, rare safety precautionary warning
The day after Sunday's chalkings in the rain. This one was not there Saturday. I think the orange letters faded from washing may have read "I loved Liberty". There were not many Sunday chalkings.
The Lebanese Garden has had a cement pole up for months, it has become the trunk of a cedar. Cedars are the national symbol of Lebanon, glance on their flag and you see.

chalk 2025, after day one

Superman was a successful picture this summer, and it was partially filmed in Cleveland the summer before. The lead actor was David Corenswet.
Some people thought Krypto was the star. Here is Perun with the chalkie.
I have gone to this a number of years, and have posted before [often i put links up to past posts, getting the idea no one clicks]. Well the the mastery of drawing, shading, and coloring varies. Some are great. Some are done by real youngsters, who often portray comic figures i do not know. Some people have messages to tell. "You are not alone" is empathetic, and life affirming.
There were a few promoting the Palestinian cause. Last year, a couple were covered up, by museum staff i presume. This one may fly under the radar. Watermelon has the colours of the Palestinian flag, Free Palestine.
Cleveland Art Museum borders Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Case Western Reserve University. There are many foreign students. There are few Hindus in America overall. Here is the Hindu god Ganesha, and the symbol for Brahman, aum/om. Important mantras begin with OM.
In Arabic folklore there is this creature, Al-miraj. Sometimes the hare is yellow, and has a black horn.
Man in the moon, a study of white and gray shading. Every chalker buys a box of colored chalk, this person limited his palette.
There is always well drawn fish, and birds. There is always dogs, and cats. Few other mammals, but i like the Highland Cow.
Snack time is important for your dog.
Now, a lot of current culture i do not recognise. I saw all the Star wars movies that made it to the picture show. I know there are Star Wars teevee series, and i have not watched one. I read, and here that Andor is pretty good. It is about rebels trying to survive the malevolent empire (sure fits with in the national scene).
Do not recognise this actor.

Another thing i noticed, and saw in notes was "6-7". It showed up a few times in drawings. I asked someone passing by, if they knew about it. They did not, but another fellow heard me, and told me, and sang it. He told me the name of the rapper, and it was his song.

There are annual events, that i like to see again and again.  some events are repetitive year to year, but this one, every year there are new drawings, new artists, new current themes. We like to see this art, on the morning after.  We brought are house wolves, and we did not want to get in peoples' way. We were also freer to snap complete fotos.  These were taken to-day.  I would like to go, and see the drawings done to-day.  The immediate forecast is rain.  One year, many drawings were washed out. There is some rain now, while i am typing.

current cause célèbre

A nazi was shot by an American*, for the first time since 1967☨. Charlie Kirk was a fascist, an American nazi. The same day he was shot, two school kids in Colorado were shot by a classmate, who then committed suicide. Kirk would not have cared, as he did not care when so many have been killed before. He was responding to a question about mass shootings when he was hit. As is typical with Republicans, he answered a sincere question with a dismissive/snarky question. He was a second amendment absolutist. Bullet ridden school children, church attendees, shoppers in grocery stores....he did not believe in empathy. He was an "evangelical" who had no faith in the actual, historical Jesus. All those death by guns were acceptable. It was additional poetic irony that he was shot in an "open carry" state.

He also believed there was no limit to speech, no limit to hateful and dishonest speech (at least the kind he spewed). He was a zealot, and missionary for hate and false speech. Naturally he rallied people to *rump. So let us think he would remain consistent, and not think of him as a possible hypocrite (as many who mourned him are). And it would be hypocritical for him to have objected if someone would have unpleasant words, or feelings concerning his death. But immediately other American fascists were making of him their Horst Wessel, and calling for vengeance. None of these had a word of sorrow for Melissa Hortman, her husband, and their dog when they were all shot dead, and for John Hoffman and his wife, both survived being shot by the same politically conservative (read: fascist) evangelical.

_______________________

postscriptum: 1pm, 13 September:  *Tyler James Robinson 22 was the shooter. He comes from a Republican Mormon family.      (the following is a version of the timeline) His father recognised him from the news foto. Father told a youth pastor who works with US Marshalls. Then the sheriff's office was called.

edit change, the original first sentence was: "A nazi was shot by an American (presumably), for the first time since 1945."  I forgot that Lincoln Rockwell was shot by a fellow nazi in 1967.

postscriptum: 2.30pm, 13 September:   A local councilman was "cancelled" for his personal & truthful opinion. He has been forced to resign. The state & local Republican Party is gloating. No one has first amendment rights who speaks ill of the *rump regime, or their confederates. Kilbane was right. Many have already suffered retaliation for not bowing to Kirk & *rump. It has to be remembered that Kirk insisted he had the right to say anything to anybody. If the first amendment is revised for these times it would say that fascist speech is free, and everyone must hear it. Other speech is prohibited, and illegal, and is punishable.

These stores were ubiquitous in northeast Ohio, now if you want to go to a Lawson's, it's either Japan or Hawai'i.  The glue that attached them here remains on building after building.

2025 Miscellany #15 — foto safari

romantic, nostalgic, idealised mural of a long gone amusement park on Lakeshore Blvd. Cleveland

A building was demolished in Cleveland, on Superior. Two advertising signs were painted on the building next to it. Rothkopf Brothers had eleven stores in the 1930s.

VeloSano bicyclists on East Blvd. Cleveland
Origin story of Mezcal on a building in downtown Cleveland.

The Asian [read Chinese] lantern promotion at the zoo has ended.  One walkway had large sea animals in a stained glass like presentation.  Thought it was well done.  Overall, after a few years they are running out of ideas. another walkway that looked good was an ancient Egyptian.  The zodiac animals were almost like shrine sculptures, also looking good, and dragons were plentiful.
What used to be called Newburgh is called Slavic Village.  Most of the Slavs are gone.  The area has had major economic deprivation, and vandalism. There is a yearly weekend art event called "Rooms to Let".  The first few years, houses that were to be demolished were open for artists to create something.  People were allowed to see the finish works. Now it has shifted to the area around Our Lady of Lourdes, in the former Czech hub of town.  Broadway & East 55th were like the central business center for Newburgh. Most of the store fronts are vacant, apartments are vacant, many houses are in bad repair. Over one store window was this panel, the only with a Slavonic (probably) theme, could be Czech.
