JEDNOTA in Slovak is UNION
First Catholic Slovak Union was formed, in 1890, to provide funeral and life insurance (and other matters) for Slovak immigrants dying in East Pennsylvania coalfields, and factories in Cleveland and other industrial cities. Founded by the founding pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Cleveland, Fr. Stefan Furdek. In 1919 it was headquartered in a house on East 55th, near the church. In 1932 the house was expanded with art deco styling and a stone facade. They moved out in 1988.
