Sterle's Country House
Painting of married Slovene peasant woman looking at E. 55th Cleveland.
Na Zdravje! [to your health, said to fellow drinker(s)], sometimes misheard as
"nice driveway". This was over a bar in an adjacent room. There is grapes, barley, plums, and hops, and their end products. Traditionally, Slovenes have a viticulture; but there is a German (through Austria) influence shown here. Plum brandy is
slivovka/slivovic, schnaps is German for any of many spirits. There is a Slovene minority in Austria Styria.A Slovene rural scene, complete with hay, church, and the Alps. This might be the last anyone sees of these paintings.
Demolition vehicles are parked outside, and the word to start is approaching. The snow is covering several heaps of back fill ready to cover up the hole. There had been a fire.
This was a Slovene area of the city. Sterle's was a well known restaurant for many years. Just a few years ago, the buildings immediately north, up to St. Clair were to be a revitalised portion of Cleveland. It is not happening now. A sheriff's auction was listed for 28 May 2020. The fire was 22 November 2022.
