new zoo dome

Cleveland Zoo is getting a new dome for the Rain Forest building, which was built in 1992.

They are assembling it in the parking lot. Plans are to break it down to three parts to be lifted onto the building. During the project the building is closed. The price tag is about two million dollars.

Postscriptum 5.30 p.m. 19 August 2020:  It was reported that the dome was lifted into place in one piece, using the largest crane in Ohio. The structure weighed 70,000 pounds.

public paintings, new and old

 Get in good trouble...necessary trouble.

These two fotos are from a multi-panel weekend painting, co-ordinated by GraffitiHeArt, on Euclid Avenue in Collinwood, below Lampson. The old lake shore began at present day Euclid Avenue, and the heights continue to rise southward.

On the other slope of this retaining wall is an older six panel of female portraits. Three of them have the eyes whited out.

"We gotta live together" is the new mural.

This, "Come together" is in South Euclid, maybe last year.

This one also went up last weekend. It replaced the one below, the same artist did ten months ago.

He did this one on the weekend for a customer.

Garfield's Gargoyles

 

President and Mrs. James Garfield are buried in Lake View Cemetery Cleveland. The graveyard is marking its 150 years with a clean up and restoration of the monument. Acid rain, industrial soot, other pollution, and weathering have discolored and deteriorated the building.  Scaffolding has been removed, which was used to clean the stone, patch the mortar, and remove vegetation. This foto is from 5 August 2020.

On top of the dome, below the roof are six gargoyles. Another six are below the belvedere. Gargoyle is related to gargle, for they are rain spouts carved as grotesques. Latin, French, Spanish, Portuguese all have similar words for throat, or gullet. Do not know if these are functional here after restoration.

Then emperor, er uh mayor of Cleveland, Michael White was not pleased. In the near past, the Free Stamp sculpture by Claes Oldenburg was finally allowed a place. Sohio (Amoco) had commissioned it, and when Amoco was purchased by British Petroleum, they and the George Forbes (City Council Leader) did not want it. After nine years it found a home, next to City Hall.

Billie Lawless created the giant electrical toy in 1995, and it ended up in 1996 kitty korner to a firehouse on Chester in an abandoned lot. In 2009 it was on the campus of Cleveland State, further downtown on Chester. Part of the sculpture is wording that can be changed. He changed the wording in 2018, and Cleveland State was not pleased, and covered up the wording The new wording alluded to a vulgar remark made by Donald the Trump. Lawless referred to his contract, and sued citing free speech. The work was moved onto his property in 2019, after he won the suit.

It is a hot summer, and we are supposed to be six feet away from passerbys. Hounds are to be walked. One scenic place, with trees, and little traffic is Lake View Cemetery. In the Metroparks, we have to move over for bicycles; not so there. The landscaping, and graves are well maintained, and there is much to see. This statue is of a girl pushing a wheelbarrow., don't know the sculptor, or date of installation; but it has been recently shown in promotion.

This is of similar art. It is on Cleveland State's campus, and is part of a larger work. The sculptor had created the work in miniature, and i suppose someone asked him for a life size, The original was called "Memories". This has been there at least from 2017. Paul Tadlock is a prolific sculptor from New Braunfels Texas.

This is part of a grave sculpture for a married couple at Lake View. This cropping looks like a portal.

Paul Tadlock's smith is across Fenn Tower, and promoting engineering at the college. This version is "Learning the Trade".

National Town and Country Club opened in 1930, and had one event (a Christmas lunch), and Hoover's Depression closed it. It is 22 stories high (then Cleveland's third tallest building), and was bought by Fenn College in 1937, and has been Fenn Tower since.  Fenn College was the precursor to Cleveland State University. Fenn was on of the three founders of Sherwin-Williams Paint Co., he was the one not named Sherwin or Williams. There are three art deco rams on the front.

This painting is new at #GraffitiHeart building on Superior & East 49th.

Her head looks similar to Peace in the Cultural Gardens [click], but also the Guardian Pylons on the Lorain&Carnegie Bridge. Artist Beau Stanton of Brooklyn and Los Angeles had some more painting to go, and the weekend will be/was rainy. Whether the flower is a lotus, or dahlia is your guess.

It has been reported, that Parma High before 1936 was nicknamed 'Greyhounds'.  Currently the school nickname is 'Redmen', and it may be on its way out.
